If you’re in the market for a website, or a blog, or social media marketing service, you’ll want to know what the company’s real online marketing strategy is, says David Wigdor, chief operating officer at online marketing consultancy ICTA.
If you want to ask the right questions to get a better idea of whether a company’s online marketing efforts are really delivering on their promises, Wigdal says, it’s important to do so before investing in their online efforts.
“If you ask the wrong questions you’re going to find out that they don’t really have a real strategy,” Wigddor told Business Insider.

Are they using the right tools for the job?
Internet marketing services and websites are becoming more sophisticated, and companies are using more tools to improve their online presence.
In the past, a company would use a tool to help their site stand out, but now, they’re often using it to help them rank in search results, to increase their engagement, and to measure their conversion rate.
The right tools can also help you understand if the company is targeting their potential customers in a way that’s helpful for them.2.
Is the company doing their own analytics?
Most companies have an internal tracking system, and some also offer some form of online analytics.
For example, if you’re looking for a service that can help you track the effectiveness of a campaign, look at the company you’re interested in.
An online analytics service might track the number of visitors, the number who click on a link to your site, and how long they stay on your website.3.
Is their email list active?
Some companies use an email list to track their customer base.
When you’re trying to track how many people you’re getting for your website, you might also want to look at how many new customers sign up each month.
Once you know the answer to these questions, you can begin to determine whether the company has a legitimate email list and whether their online marketing practices are effective.4.
Is there a dedicated sales team?
Many companies use sales teams to drive sales, but if you want more insights into the success of your online marketing campaign, you should also ask whether the sales team has a dedicated online marketing team, says Wigdlos.

It may be tempting to just sign up for a free account with a marketing company for your company’s website, but there are times when it might be more beneficial to ask whether a free marketing account is available to other companies.
Depending on the company, you may be able to request that a free email marketing account be offered to your company for free, Wgdlos says.6.
Are the company members paying for the service?
If a company has its own dedicated sales force, it might not be possible for the company to offer its members free access to its service.
This is especially true if the membership fees aren’t competitive.7.
Are there plans to increase membership?
As you can imagine, some companies have plans to add more members to their online community, and you may want to check the company site for more information.8.
Is that company offering free trials?
You can find out whether a marketing service is available for free or for a fixed fee.
You might want to read reviews of the services offered by other companies that have been offering free trial services.9.
Are you a member of the company?
You can see whether a membership is available on the website, and if so, how much it will cost.
Wigdor recommends asking about membership fees, which will usually be at least $1.50 per month for a one-month membership, or $2 per month over three months.10.
Are their members using a free service?
If you’re a member, you’re likely to get more benefit from the company than the free trials you might get.
Most online marketing companies offer paid trials, where they offer you a trial period to test out a particular service.
You can also opt to pay for a full trial of a service, which includes a subscription to a paid subscription to the service, as well as other benefits, such like advertising, access to a dedicated team, and access to their paid membership portal.
